Although Half Baked was a box office failure (it only earned $17.5 million worldwide) and received generally negative reviews, it has become somewhat of a cult classic since its release. Starring comedian Dave Chapelle and co-written by Neal Brennan, the film follows a group of stoners as they attempt to sell cannabis stolen from a pharmaceutical lab in order to bail their friend out of jail. If it sounds pretty far-fetched...it is. But what cannabis buddy comedy isn’t? Fun fact: Chapelle and Brennan went on to write and direct The Chappelle Show, and Half-Baked gives us an early glimpse at their talents.

Dazed and Confused
This coming-of-age comedy follows different groups of Texas teens during their last day of school in 1976. It was a minor success at the box office, but has enjoyed critical success since its release. Quentin Tarantino even listed it as one of his favorite movies of all time, and it’s ranked 10th on Entertainment Weekly’s list of the “Funniest Movies of the Past 25 Years.” Whether you’ve seen it or not, you’re probably familiar with the lovable cannabis aficionados played by Matthew McConaughey and Sean Penn.

The first movie from the 2000s on this list, American Ultra follows a small-town stoner who, unbeknownst to him, is secretly being trained by the CIA to be a lethal killing machine. When he’s targeted for termination his handler activates his skills, turning him into a deadly weapon of the human variety. Throughout the film he must use his newfound abilities to save himself and his girlfriend. Starring Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart, it’s an action-packed thrill ride that can’t be missed.

The funniest character in this movie is a stuffed teddy bear who moves and talks. He’s gross, he’s vulgar, and he loves hanging out and smoking cannabis with his best friend John, played by Mark Wahlberg. The film follows the two pals as they drink, smoke, and crack dirty jokes - did we mention it’s a vulgar movie, not for the faint of heart? Directed by Seth MacFarlane, the creator of Family Guy, Ted was the 12th highest-grossing film of 2012 and even received an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song.

Another comedy that’s on the raunchy side, this one follows a video game tester who is forced to move in with his grandmother after being evicted from his home. Hilarity ensues, including but not limited to his grandmother and her friends mistaking his cannabis for tea. It won several honors in High Times’ 2006 Stony Awards, including “Best Stoner Movie” and “Best Pot Scene in a Movie.” If you’re looking for something to watch with your grandmother, this probably isn’t it. But if you’re looking for a stoner classic from the mid-00s, it doesn’t get any better than this.
